Consultations are usually 50 minutes long. The length of the subsequent sessions will depend on the nature and severity of the presenting problem and the type of treatment moving forward. This will all be explained to you either in your initial appointment or in a follow up call by one of our clinicians.

What are the warning signs of mental health difficulties in children?

It can sometimes be difficult to notice a change in your own children and even more difficult when we don’t know what to look for.

Children can develop all the same mental health conditions that adults can but children often struggle to appropriately articulate what they are feeling.

The signs to look for are as follows:

  • Mood changes – is your child sad or withdrawn for at least 2 weeks? Do they have severe mood swings?
  • Difficulty concentrating – are they struggling to focus or sit still? Has their teacher mentioned anything about their performance at school?
  • Behavior changes – are they behaving out of character? Perhaps you have noticed a personality shift?
  • Other signs include: Intense feelings, unexplained weight loss, physical symptoms, physical harm, substance abuse.

If you notice any of the above in your child, please call us to book an appointment to explore this further.

What to Expect

It can be incredibly daunting to take the first step in contacting someone for help. At Sage, we strive to provide a safe and comfortable environment for our clients throughout every aspect of their journey with us.

Contacting the Clinic

The first step is to get in touch with us to let us know you are interested in thinking together about how we can best support you or your family member. You can get in touch with us via telephone on +971 4 575 5684 or via email on appointments@sage-clinics.com.

Following this, our administrative team will call you to gather some preliminary information related to the nature of the problem. It is important to gather this information, as we have many highly trained clinicians who have expertise in a range of disciplines, and we aim to match you to the most appropriate clinician based on your needs. Our administration team are trained to enquire sensitively, and it is most helpful if you can answer their questions. This then ensures you get the most out of your treatment with us.  We also ask some practical questions around your insurance and whether you will require documents for reimbursement, again so we can support you in this process as much as possible.

Your First Appointment

Following this initial call, you will be offered an appointment with an appropriate clinician. We recommend you attend appointments face to face but appreciate this might be difficult if you are travelling from a distance. In these cases, if possible, we recommend attending at least the initial appointment face to face, before moving to online sessions for any future sessions scheduled. We find this particularly valuable for children and young people, to build a therapeutic relationship and reduce anxiety about seeing a therapist.

When you come to Sage, we have a dedicated waiting area which we have designed to be a comfortable and soothing space, and refreshments are available. We also have a section available for children to play whilst they await their appointment. We kindly request you arrive 15 minutes early, as you will be provided with some standard questionnaires for you to complete whilst you await your appointment. Your clinician will then meet you in the waiting room and show you to their clinic room to begin the appointment.

At Sage, the initial session is always to gather information about what you would like help with, along with developing a shared understanding of what might be happening and why. We aim to then collaboratively discuss recommendations based on this initial assessment and with your goals and needs in mind. Your clinician will explain the next steps from there, depending on what has been agreed.

What to expect if the appointment is for my child or teenager?

If your child is under the age of 18, we require parental consent from both parents/guardian in order to be able to offer services. If one parent is not available to provide consent, please discuss this with our administration team.

For children and adolescents, we ask that a parent accompanies them to the initial appointment. This is important as it allows us to gather collateral information on the difficulties and observations from the parents.  Parents will be able to answer questions on family history and the child or adolescents’ development. It also allows parents to be involved in agreeing and understanding treatment moving forward.

Some older adolescents may continue with individual therapy, and we would generally continue to involve parents at regular reviews of treatment so that they are aware of general progress and how they can be involved in supporting their child. We would maintain the child’s confidentiality within the bounds of what is expected during treatment, more of which can be discussed during the initial appointment.

What happens if I need to cancel my appointment?
