ABOUT THE TALK:
Do you notice you are usually the first in the office, the last to leave, plan everything to a meticulous standard and are always busy with a never-ending to-do list? This sounds very organized and effective…but perhaps you also notice on the inside you are always worrying about letting people down, often feel stressed and tense, and avoid taking time for yourself even when you really need to. A survey by Gallup in 2022 indicated 7 in 10 UAE employees are at a higher risk of stress and burnout; and a recent study by Deloitte found that 77% of executives reported experiencing burnout at some point in their career and 87% feel more stressed than they did 5 years ago. Given the current climate post pandemic, these rising levels are not surprising. Alongside this, employees might find themselves presenting as calm and collected on the outside, but internally there may be an internal storm of anxiety and worry. This is not uncommon, as high achievers are more likely to experience what we call high functioning anxiety, which is used as a driver to succeed but at the unintended expense of internal wellbeing.
This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is from 15th to 21st May and follows a theme of anxiety; so, in their talk, Dr Gurveen Ranger and Dr Bisi Laniyan discuss how to spot signs of high functioning anxiety and burnout, and some tips on how to manage this if it sounds familiar to you.
