We are here to help

Bipolar Disorder

At Sage Clinics, we understand the complexities of bipolar disorder and the significant impact it can have on individuals and their loved ones. Our Bipolar Disorder Services offer comprehensive support and treatment options to help individuals manage their symptoms, stabilize their mood, and improve their quality of life.

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood swings can vary in severity and duration, significantly impacting a person’s thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and functioning.  Bipolar disorder can have a profound impact on individuals, affecting their relationships, work, school, and overall well-being. The fluctuating mood swings associated with bipolar disorder can disrupt daily routines, impair judgment, and lead to impulsive or risky behaviors during manic episodes. The depressive episodes can be equally debilitating, causing feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, and isolation.

Bipolar disorder not only affects the individual but also impacts their support system, including family members, friends, and caregivers. Loved ones may struggle to understand and cope with the unpredictable nature of the disorder, leading to stress, strain, and conflict within relationships. Additionally, the financial burden of treatment and missed opportunities due to symptoms can further exacerbate the challenges faced by individuals with bipolar disorder and their families.

At Sage Clinics, we recognize that living with bipolar disorder can be challenging and disruptive to various aspects of an individual’s life. We understand the unique needs and struggles faced by individuals with bipolar disorder and their families, and we offer personalized support and treatment options to help them navigate their journey to wellness.

Our services include:

  • Medication Management: We offer medication management services to help individuals find the right balance of medications to stabilize their mood, manage symptoms, and minimize side effects.
  • Psychotherapy: We provide evidence-based psychotherapy interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and interpersonal therapy (IPT), to help individuals manage mood swings, regulate emotions, and develop coping skills to navigate the challenges of bipolar disorder.

  • Psychoeducation: We provide psychoeducation and resources to individuals and their families to increase understanding of bipolar disorder, treatment options, symptom management strategies, and strategies for promoting wellness and stability.

Who can benefit from it?

You may benefit from our Bipolar Services if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Extreme Mood Swings: Individuals with bipolar disorder experience intense and abrupt shifts in mood, ranging from periods of elevated mood (mania or hypomania) to periods of low mood (depression). These mood swings are more severe than typical mood fluctuations and can last for days, weeks, or even months.
  • Manic Episodes: During manic episodes, individuals may experience a heightened sense of energy, euphoria, and optimism. They may engage in impulsive or risky behaviors, such as overspending, reckless driving, or substance abuse. Other symptoms of mania may include racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, increased talkativeness, and difficulty concentrating.
  • Hypomanic Episodes: Hypomania is a milder form of mania characterized by similar symptoms but with less severe impairment in functioning. Individuals may still experience increased energy, productivity, and creativity during hypomanic episodes, but the symptoms are less severe and may not significantly interfere with daily life.
  • Depressive Episodes: Depressive episodes in bipolar disorder are marked by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair. Individuals may experience changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. Suicidal thoughts or behaviors may also occur during depressive episodes.
  • Cyclothymic Symptoms: Some individuals with bipolar disorder may experience cyclothymia, a milder form of bipolar disorder characterized by numerous periods of hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms that do not meet the criteria for a full-blown manic or depressive episode.
  • Changes in Behavior and Functioning: Bipolar disorder can significantly impact an individual’s behavior, relationships, work, and daily functioning. Changes in behavior, such as impulsivity, irritability, agitation, or withdrawal, may be noticeable to others. Individuals may also struggle with maintaining relationships, holding down a job, or managing daily responsibilities during mood episodes.
  • Family History: Bipolar disorder often runs in families, so individuals with a family history of the condition may be at higher risk of developing the disorder themselves.

It’s important to note that not everyone with bipolar disorder will experience all of these symptoms, and the severity and frequency of symptoms can vary from person to person. Additionally, symptoms may change over time, and individuals may go through periods of stability between mood episodes.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder, it’s essential to seek help from a mental health professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention and proper management can help individuals with bipolar disorder lead fulfilling and productive lives.

Alex Story

Alex, a 30-year-old software developer, sought help at Sage Clinics for symptoms of bipolar disorder that were significantly impacting his life. He had been experiencing periods of intense mood swings, ranging from euphoric highs to deep depressive lows, for several years, but it wasn't until recently that he realized he needed professional support to manage his symptoms.

During his initial assessment with a psychiatrist at Sage Clinics, Alex described his symptoms in detail, including episodes of elevated mood, increased energy, impulsivity, and decreased need for sleep during manic episodes, followed by periods of profound sadness, fatigue, and loss of interest during depressive episodes. The psychiatrist conducted a comprehensive evaluation, including a review of Alex's medical history, symptoms, and family history of mental health conditions, to confirm a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Based on Alex's presentation and the severity of his symptoms, the psychiatrist recommended starting medication to help stabilize his mood and reduce the frequency and intensity of mood swings. Alex was prescribed a mood stabilizer and an antidepressant, along with regular follow-up appointments to monitor his response to treatment and adjust his medication regimen as needed.

In addition to medication management, the psychiatrist referred Alex to a psychologist at Sage Clinics for psychotherapy to help him better understand and manage his symptoms of bipolar disorder. In therapy, Alex had the opportunity to explore his thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to his mood swings and develop coping strategies to regulate his emotions, manage stress, and improve his overall well-being. With the guidance of his psychologist, Alex learned techniques to identify early warning signs of mood swings, such as changes in sleep patterns, irritability, or racing thoughts, and implement strategies to prevent or mitigate mood episodes. He also worked on improving his communication skills, setting boundaries, and developing a support network of family and friends to help him navigate the challenges of bipolar disorder.

As Alex progressed in his treatment, he continued to receive ongoing support and monitoring from both his psychiatrist and psychologist at Sage Clinics. Regular appointments with his psychiatrist allowed for adjustments to his medication regimen based on his symptoms and treatment response, while therapy sessions with his psychologist provided a safe and supportive space to explore deeper issues related to his mental health and personal growth.

Over time, with the combined approach of medication management and psychotherapy, Alex experienced significant improvements in his symptoms and quality of life. While he still faced occasional mood swings and challenges associated with bipolar disorder, he felt more equipped to manage his condition.

Alex's journey with bipolar disorder treatment at Sage Clinics highlights the importance of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to managing the condition. By addressing both the biological and psychological aspects of bipolar disorder, Alex was able to achieve stability, gain insight into his symptoms, and develop coping skills to navigate the challenges of living with bipolar disorder.
