As anyone with chronic pain knows, pain doesn’t just affect the body – it also takes a toll on the mind. Research shows that many pain syndromes have both physical and neuropsychological dimensions, both of which need to be addressed if quality of life is to be restored. Persistent pain also leads to heightened stress, anxiety, and depression, all of which can drive a vicious cycle and negatively impact relationships and daily life.
At Sage Clinics, we take a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain management, recognizing that effective treatment requires addressing both its physical and psychological aspects. Our team consists of experienced professionals, including psychologists and psychiatrists, bring specialized expertise and work collaboratively with other members of your healthcare team to develop treatment plans tailored to your unique needs. We can work collaboratively with your pain specialist, rheumatologist or neurologist in order to think about a comprehensive and holistic treatment approach.

Jill, a 42-year-old HR manager, sought therapy at Sage Clinics to manage the psychological impact of living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune condition causing joint pain and inflammation. Despite managing her physical symptoms with medication and treatment, Jill struggled with feelings of frustration, sadness, and anxiety related to her condition's impact on her daily life and well-being. She was feeling like her world was becoming smaller and she could not feel any enjoyment in things. She also felt quite hopeless for the future too, worrying about how she will cope.
Upon her initial assessment at Sage Clinics, Jill was assigned to work with a psychologist specializing in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Together, they explored Jill's experiences, challenges, and goals for therapy. Jill expressed her desire to learn coping strategies to better manage her emotional distress and live a fulfilling life despite her chronic pain.
Throughout her therapy sessions, Jill and her psychologist focused on applying ACT principles to help her cultivate psychological flexibility and resilience in the face of her rheumatoid arthritis. They worked on accepting her pain and physical limitations while also committing to actions aligned with her values and goals, adapting certain tasks where needed.
Jill learned to observe her thoughts and feelings about her condition without judgment, recognizing that struggling against her pain only intensified her suffering. She practiced mindfulness techniques to bring present-moment awareness to her experiences, allowing her to respond more effectively to her pain and discomfort.
Using values clarification exercises, Jill identified what was most important to her in life, such as maintaining her independence, nurturing relationships, and pursuing meaningful work. She worked with her psychologist to develop action plans and set achievable goals that aligned with her values, despite the challenges posed by her rheumatoid arthritis.
As Jill progressed through her therapy sessions, she noticed a shift in her relationship with her pain and her ability to cope with adversity. She felt empowered to engage in activities that brought her joy and fulfillment, even in the presence of discomfort. Jill also developed greater self-compassion and resilience, recognizing her strength and resilience in the face of her chronic condition.
