Psychosis

Psychosis is a mental health condition that can affect a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Psychosis can be hard to talk about for several reasons, particularly as it can be a stigmatized and misunderstood condition. Many people may not understand what it is or may have negative beliefs and assumptions about individuals who experience psychosis. This can create a sense of shame or embarrassment for individuals experiencing psychosis, which can make it difficult to talk about their experiences openly. Furthermore, psychosis can involve experiencing symptoms that are difficult to describe or understand. Individuals may experience hallucinations or delusions that can be confusing, frightening, or distressing. Trying to communicate these experiences to others can be challenging and may require a significant amount of effort and energy.

It’s important to recognize that whilst talking about psychosis can be challenging, it is an important step towards recovery. Seeking support from trusted friends, family members, or mental health professionals can help individuals feel less alone and more supported in their recovery journey.

At Sage, we offer comprehensive assessments with our psychiatrists and/or psychologists to understand the factors contributing to the problem and your experience of the associated symptoms. We then discuss evidence-based treatment options collaboratively with you and work together to put this into place. Our services include:

  • Assessment and diagnosis: Our team provides a thorough assessment of symptoms and provides a diagnosis of psychosis, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
  • Medication management: We work closely with individuals to identify the most effective medications for managing symptoms and to monitor their progress.
  • Individual therapy: Our team provides evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help individuals manage symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Who can benefit from it?

You or a loved one might benefit from professional help if you notice a few of the following signs:

  • Hallucinations: Hearing, seeing, feeling, or smelling things that are not actually there. These can be vivid and realistic and can be difficult for the person experiencing them to distinguish from reality.
  • Delusions: Holding beliefs that are not based in reality. For example, a person may believe that they are being persecuted or that they have special powers or abilities.
  • Disorganized thinking: Difficulty organizing thoughts or speaking in a coherent and logical manner. This can lead to disjointed speech, making it difficult for others to understand what the person is trying to say.
  • Disordered behavior: Acting in unusual or unpredictable ways, such as suddenly becoming agitated, restless, or withdrawn.
  • Negative symptoms: A lack of emotional expression or motivation, reduced speech, or loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities.
  • Impaired social functioning: Difficulty with social interactions and relationships, such as difficulty understanding social cues or experiencing discomfort in social situations.

We understand that living with psychosis can be challenging for both individuals and their families. Our team is committed to providing compassionate and personalized care to support individuals in their recovery journey. We are here to help and welcome you to reach out to us for support.

Adel's Journey

Adel, a 21-year-old student studying computer science, came to Sage Clinic for help with symptoms of psychosis. During his initial assessment with one of our psychologists, Adel described how his symptoms began gradually, with subtle changes in his behavior and thinking patterns. He started to become increasingly suspicious of others, believing that people were watching him or conspiring against him. Adel became preoccupied with the idea that his classmates and professors were plotting to sabotage his academic success and undermine his achievements. As his paranoia intensified, Adel started to withdraw from social interactions and spend more time alone in his room. He became increasingly guarded and secretive, avoiding eye contact and speaking in vague language. Adel's family and friends noticed these changes and became concerned about his well-being, prompting them to encourage him to seek professional help.

In addition to his paranoid beliefs, Adel began experiencing auditory hallucinations, hearing voices that seemed to come from outside his head. These voices would make derogatory or threatening comments, further fueling his paranoia and distress. Adel struggled to distinguish between reality and delusion, finding it increasingly difficult to trust his own perceptions and judgments. Despite his symptoms, Adel was hesitant to seek help at first, fearing that others would dismiss his experiences or label him as "crazy." However, as his symptoms worsened and his functioning declined, Adel recognized the need for support and decided to schedule an appointment with us, but he was honest with his therapist about how he was still skeptical about how we could help.

Adel's treatment plan at Sage Clinic involved a combination of therapy and medication management. During his therapy sessions with the psychologist, Adel learned practical strategies to manage his psychotic symptoms and improve his overall quality of life. Through CBT techniques, Adel learned to challenge his delusional beliefs and develop coping strategies for managing his hallucinations. He also worked on improving his insight into his condition and building skills to enhance his functioning and well-being. In addition to therapy, Adel met regularly with our psychiatrist to discuss medication options for managing his symptoms. After a thorough evaluation, Adel was prescribed antipsychotic medication to help alleviate his hallucinations and delusions. The psychiatrist monitored Adel's response to medication and adjusted his dosage as needed to achieve optimal symptom control.

As Adel progressed through his treatment at Sage Clinic, he noticed significant improvements in his symptoms and overall functioning. He felt more in control of his thoughts and emotions, and his hallucinations and delusions whilst still present to some extent, became less frequent and intense. With the support of his treatment team, Adel developed a better understanding of his condition and learned valuable skills to manage his psychosis effectively. Adel eventually returned to his studies and continues to engage in therapy and medication management to maintain his progress and prevent relapse. Adel’s journey highlights the importance of multidisciplinary collaborative teamworking in order to address both the biological and psychological components of psychosis.
