Sleep is one of the foundations of physical and psychological wellbeing. When sleep is disrupted, it can affect almost every aspect of daily life, including mood, concentration, memory, energy, relationships, and overall functioning. Sleep difficulties can also increase the risk of anxiety, depression, irritability, stress, and burnout, while mental health difficulties can in turn worsen sleep problems, creating a difficult cycle to break.

At Sage Clinics, we take a multidisciplinary approach to sleep and sleep disorders, recognising that sleep difficulties often have both psychological and physical contributors. Our team includes experienced psychologists and psychiatrists who work collaboratively with other members of your healthcare team to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Where appropriate, we can also work alongside your GP, psychiatrist, neurologist, ENT specialist, or sleep physician to ensure a comprehensive and holistic approach to your care.

    Our Services Include:

    • Assessment and diagnosis: Our team provides a thorough assessment of your sleep difficulties, including your sleep patterns, lifestyle factors, stress levels, emotional wellbeing, medical history, and any behaviours that may be maintaining the problem. This helps us identify whether your difficulties are linked to insomnia, anxiety, stress, trauma, circadian rhythm disruption, or other sleep-related concerns, so that we can develop a targeted treatment plan.
    • Individual therapy: Our team offers a range of evidence-based therapies designed to improve sleep quality and address the emotional and behavioural factors that often contribute to sleep problems. This may include sleep hygiene strategies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), anxiety management, stress reduction, mindfulness-based strategies, and other tailored interventions depending on your needs.
    • Medication management: Where appropriate, we work closely with you and your medical team to review whether medication may have a role in supporting your sleep or any associated mental health difficulties. Our psychiatrists can provide careful assessment and monitoring when medication is indicated, while also considering longer-term strategies for sustainable improvement.
    • Family education and support: Sleep difficulties can affect the whole household, particularly when someone is experiencing chronic sleep disruption, irritability, fatigue, or reduced coping. We support individuals and families to better understand sleep difficulties, create healthier routines, and make practical changes that improve wellbeing over time.

    Layal's Journey

Layal, a 36-year-old marketing manager, came to Sage Clinics after struggling with sleep difficulties for over a year. What had started as a short period of poor sleep during a stressful phase at work had gradually become a more persistent problem. She was finding it difficult to fall asleep, often lying awake for hours worrying about the next day, and would frequently wake in the night feeling tense and frustrated. Over time, she began to dread bedtime and noticed that her sleep problems were affecting her mood, concentration, confidence, and ability to cope.

During her initial assessment at Sage Clinics, Layal was matched with a psychologist experienced in working with insomnia and anxiety. Together, they explored the cycle that had developed around her sleep, including racing thoughts at night, trying too hard to force sleep, spending extra time in bed to “catch up,” and feeling increasingly anxious as bedtime approached.

Throughout therapy, Layal and her psychologist worked on understanding the behavioural and psychological factors maintaining her insomnia. She learned strategies to build a more consistent sleep routine, reduce unhelpful habits that were reinforcing wakefulness, and respond differently to the frustration and anxiety she felt during the night. They also explored the pressure she placed on herself during the day, and how this contributed to mental overstimulation at night.

As treatment progressed, Layal began to feel more confident in her ability to manage difficult nights without spiraling into panic. Her sleep gradually became more settled and predictable, and she noticed improvements in her energy, concentration, and emotional resilience. Most importantly, she no longer felt that sleep was controlling her life.
