Dr Charlotte Cousins

Clinical Psychologist, Lead of Children & Adolescent Services and Perinatal & Couples Specialist

I believe that individuals and families are the experts on their lives and therefore play a central role in identifying the solutions to the difficulties they experience. I endeavor to work collaboratively with each person, couple, or family, acknowledging and drawing on their experiences, skills, resources and strengths.

Dr. Charlotte Cousins is Clinical Psychologist from the UK with over ten years’ experience of working with children, teenagers, adults, and families across a range of settings, both within the NHS and private practice.

She specializes in working with women, their partners and families during pregnancy and into parenthood when there are difficulties with mental health, adjusting to parenthood or developing a relationship with a baby or child.

Dr. Charlotte also specializes in working with children, adolescents and their families experiencing a wide range of social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

She draws on her training and clinical experience to help identify evidence-based approaches to use with the people she works with. However, she believes that individuals and families are the experts on their lives and therefore play a central role in identifying the solutions to the difficulties they experience. She endeavors to work collaboratively with each person, couple or family, acknowledging and drawing on their experiences, skills, resources and strengths. Therefore, a person-centered, integrative approach is used to ensure that the approach is informed by the evidence base but adapted to meet an individual’s circumstances and needs.

Prior to joining Sage Clinics, Dr. Charlotte has worked in a residential specialist therapeutic community for children experiencing emotional distress as a product of early life trauma in the UK. She has also worked in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Teams, including a specialist team for neurodiverse children and children with a diagnosis of a learning disability experiencing significant mental health difficulties. Additionally, she worked at the prestigious Beacon House, who specialize in therapy services for children, young people and their families experiencing a variety of social, emotional and mental health difficulties and the treatment of trauma.

She has also worked in community perinatal mental health teams, including the prestigious Channi Kumar Mother and Baby inpatient unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Sound London, and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, providing specialist assessment and psychological therapy for women, their partners, and babies, experiencing mental health difficulties and/or difficulties bonding with their baby during the perinatal period.

Dr. Charlotte also has experience in conducting specialist assessments for adoptive families, identifying therapeutic needs and making recommendations for therapeutic support.

In addition to clinical work, she enjoys teaching and training and has delivered training on topics related to attachment, trauma and psychological therapy for perinatal mental health and bonding difficulties to a range of professionals and services. She has also been a guest lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, Kings College London, lecturing on the delivery of psychological interventions within the perinatal period.
