Dr Mountford started our work together by asking me what sort of therapy I wanted, instead of imposing an approach.
She talks with me rather than at me. It makes me feel like a person and not like a problem to solve.
She is very organized but also flexible, so she always has a plan for each session and asks me if there is anything I’d like to add. She then adapts her plan to what happens in the session, instead of forcing the conversation to fit the pre-established plan. This also makes me feel like I’m a real person whose voice matters. It’s important because when you have an ED, you learn to be very quiet and very passive in healthcare settings (at least, that’s been my experience). Being told by a healthcare professional that what I think has value for my treatment has been a game changer.
She’s always very cheerful, and this makes me feel more optimistic after each session, even during bad weeks.
Her approach is truly weight-neutral and resolutely anti-diet culture.
ED treatment is a long battle. But I can already feel that the therapy is working, even if there is still a very long way to go. These sessions have been life-changing, and I’m so grateful.
