Each one of us has multiple stories that have shaped and influenced our lives. My approach to therapy is deeply rooted in this understanding, always aiming to provide thoughtful, personalised, and culturally sensitive support that honors each person’s unique experiences.
Over the past decade, Dr Romena Toki had the privilege of working with children and adults from diverse cultural backgrounds in the UK and now in the UAE.
She works with children and adolescents facing various challenges, including anxiety-related issues like phobias, OCD, and long-term health conditions, as well as neurodevelopmental difficulties like autism and ADHD. Her approach involves specialised assessments and tailored treatments, incorporating evidence-based practices and creative methods like narrative storytelling to help children express their feelings and experiences safely.
Dr Romena’s work with young people extends to their families, schools, and close networks, recognising their crucial role in a child’s well-being. She assists families in reconnecting after traumatic events and developing a shared understanding of the cycles that contribute to mental health issues and disconnection.
Her work with adults is equally diverse, addressing issues like stress, low mood, anxiety disorders, neurodevelopmental difficulties, and complex trauma. She helps people identify and work towards changing unhelpful patterns, develop coping strategies, and explore their unique life stories, strengths, resources and experiences. She, collaboratively with the individuals, works toward building a meaningful life in alignment with their hopes and values.
As a British Muslim South Asian woman, she has firsthand experience of the complexities of living with multiple identities. She values using approaches that respect people’s cultural and religious backgrounds when supporting them through difficult times in their lives and her commitment remains to meeting people where they are in their journey.
