ADHD is a condition that impacts a person’s ability to focus on tasks, pay attention and stay organized. Although ADHD is more commonly diagnosed in children, it can persist into adulthood. Many individuals remain undiagnosed and struggle with its consequences not only in their professional careers but also in their personal and social lives. Though diagnosis can be challenging as similar symptoms can be caused by other conditions such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, or certain medications, receiving a comprehensive assessment can be beneficial.
At Sage Clinics, ADHD symptoms are reviewed thoroughly to determine the true underlying cause – and only then are treatment recommendations developed, specific to the age of the person and tailored to their needs.
There are a variety of treatment options for ADHD including therapy, education, and if needed, medication. The key goal of treatment is to identify the best combination of these for a given individual to achieve the desired outcome. This requires not only expertise in ADHD but also teamwork among complementary professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists and counsellors. This multidisciplinary team approach is central to the clinical model at Sage and is especially valuable for complex conditions such as ADHD.

Ryan, a 13-year-old student, has been struggling in school for several years. His parents noticed that Ryan has difficulty paying attention in class, staying organized, and completing assignments on time. Concerned about his academic performance and behavior, Sarah and David decide to seek help and schedule an ADHD assessment for Ryan with a psychologist at Sage Clinic.
During the assessment, our psychologist conducted a comprehensive evaluation, first by collecting a thorough developmental history and general information about his difficulties, life experiences and current stressors. Then, using standardized measures such as the Conners' rating scales she assessed Ryan's symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Sarah and David provided information about Ryan's behavior at home, school reports, and any relevant medical history to inform this assessment.
The assessment revealed that Ryan exhibited symptoms consistent with ADHD, including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. His psychologist discussed the assessment findings with Sarah and David, explaining the diagnosis of ADHD and its potential impact on Ryan's academic and social functioning.
Recognizing the complexity of Ryan's ADHD symptoms, our psychologist recommended a multi-faceted approach to treatment, including behavioral interventions, academic accommodations, and medication management. Given the severity of Ryan's symptoms and their impact on his daily life, she also referred Ryan to a psychiatrist for further evaluation and consideration of medication. Our psychiatrist conducted a thorough assessment, including a review of Ryan's medical history, family history, and previous treatments.
Based on the assessment results and consultation with Sarah, David, and our psychologist, our psychiatrist recommends starting Ryan on a medication regimen to help manage his ADHD symptoms. She explained the potential benefits and risks of medication, as well as the importance of ongoing monitoring and follow-up appointments.
With the support of his parents, Ryan began taking medication as prescribed by his psychiatrist. He also continues to work with his psychologist at Sage on developing strategies to improve his attention, organization, and time management skills. Sarah and David collaborate with Ryan's teachers to implement academic accommodations and support services to help him succeed in school.
Over time, Ryan's symptoms did begin to improve with the combination of medication, therapy, and academic support. He became more focused, organized, and confident in his abilities. With ongoing monitoring and adjustments to his treatment plan as needed, Ryan continues to make progress in managing his ADHD and thriving academically and socially.
